GIF background remover: make a GIF transparent
Remove the background from an animated GIF and make it transparent. It works on solid-colour, green-screen, and blue-screen backgrounds: the background around the character is cleared, the edges are cleaned up, and every frame keeps its timing. Nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed.

Make a GIF transparent in four steps
- 1
Drop your GIF
Choose an animated GIF, or a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image. The background colour is found from the edges of the frames.
- 2
Check the colour
Click the original to pick a different background colour, or add a second one. Tolerance sets how close a colour must be to count as background.
- 3
Clean the edges
Smooth edges, spill removal, and shrinking the edge by a pixel take off the halo an old background leaves behind. Check the result on a light, dark, or custom colour.
- 4
Download
Save a transparent GIF, PNG frames with soft edges, or a sprite sheet with JSON for your game engine.
How the background is removed
- By default only background connected to the edge of the image is removed, so the same colour inside the character, such as white eyes on a white background, stays.
- Enclosed gaps, like the space between the legs or under an arm, can be cleared too, from a size you choose.
- Edge pixels that blend into the background fade out and have the background's colour taken out of them, instead of leaving a coloured fringe.
- On green, blue, or magenta screens, the screen's tint is taken off the character's edges.
- When the background drifts from frame to frame, as in GIFs made from video, the colour is followed in every frame.
GIF background remover questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted by JavaScript in your browser tab, and the download is created on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account.
Can it remove any background from a GIF?
No. It removes backgrounds that are one colour, or close to it: solid colours, green and blue screens, and the plain backgrounds of game sprites and many stickers. Photos and video scenes with busy backgrounds need an AI cut-out, which this free tool does not do.
Why is there a white or coloured edge around my transparent GIF?
GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges cannot fade out. Keep Smooth edges on, shrink the edge by 1 px, or set Edges in the GIF to blend into the colour of the page the GIF will be shown on.
Why did parts of my character disappear?
Those parts are close to the background colour. Lower the tolerance, keep Remove set to Around the character, and turn off clearing enclosed gaps.
How do I get a transparent animation into a game engine?
Download the PNG frames or the sprite sheet instead of a GIF. PNG keeps soft, partly transparent edges, and the sprite sheet comes with Aseprite-format JSON that Phaser, PixiJS, and engine importers read.
Does it work on a still image?
Yes. Drop a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image with a solid background and download it as a transparent PNG or GIF.
How large a GIF can it handle?
Up to 1,000 frames, limited by browser memory: the frame count times the frame area can be up to 40 million pixels, for example 160 frames at 500 × 500.
