Sprite sheet cutter: slice grids or auto-extract sprites

Cut a sprite sheet into separate sprites. Even grids are sliced cell by cell; sheets without a grid, such as ripped sheets on a solid colour, have every sprite found and boxed for you. Pick the sprites you want, then download PNGs or a clean sprite sheet. Nothing is uploaded.

Cut sprites out of a sheet in four steps

  1. 1

    Drop your sheet

Use a PNG, WebP, GIF, or JPEG sheet. A solid background colour is found and removed automatically.

  2. 2

    Check what was found

Sheets with an even grid are cut by cell; others sprite by sprite. Switch between the two, or pick the background colour yourself.

  3. 3

    Choose the sprites

Click sprites in the order you want them, or drag a box around a whole animation. Reverse flips the order.

  4. 4

    Download

Get the sprites as PNG files, trimmed or on one frame size, or packed into a clean sprite sheet with JSON.

How the cutter finds sprites

  • When the sheet has no transparency, the most common colour around its edge is treated as the background and removed. You can pick a different colour from the image.
  • Sheets that fit an even grid are cut by cell. Other sheets are cut sprite by sprite: touching pixels form one sprite, and pieces closer than the join distance (1 px by default) belong to it.
  • Each sprite keeps only its own pixels, so a neighbour reaching into its box stays out.
  • Sprites of different sizes share one frame size in sprite sheets and GIFs, aligned at the bottom centre by default so feet stay on one line.

Sprite sheet cutter questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted by JavaScript in your browser tab, and the download is created on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account.

Can it cut sprite sheets that have no grid?

Yes. When no even grid explains the sheet, the cutter finds every separate sprite and draws a box around it. Click or drag to choose the ones you want.

What about labels and credits on ripped sheets?

Text on the sheet is found as its own boxes, apart from the sprites. Leave those boxes out of your selection.

Why are two sprites in one box?

They touch, or they are closer than the join distance. Set Join pieces closer than to 0, or switch to Grid if the sheet has an even layout.

Can I turn a messy sheet into a clean sprite sheet?

Yes. Choose the sprites, then download a clean sprite sheet: the same frames on one frame size in an even grid, with Aseprite-format JSON that Phaser, PixiJS, and engine importers read.

Does it work when the background is not one colour?

No. Gradients, noise, or scenery behind the sprites cannot be told apart from the sprites. The sheet needs a transparent or single-colour background.

Is it a sprite extractor or sprite sheet unpacker?

It extracts sprites by their visible pixels. It does not read the atlas data files that game engines write, so packed atlases are cut by what you can see and keep no original frame names.
