Sprite sheet to GIF converter

Turn a sprite sheet into an animated GIF. The grid, or each separate sprite on sheets without one, is found for you, and you click the frames you want, so one row of a character sheet becomes its own animation. Choose the frame rate, scale, and background, then download. Nothing is uploaded.

Turn a sprite sheet into a GIF in four steps

  1. 1

    Drop your sprite sheet

Use a PNG, WebP, GIF, or JPEG sheet with frames in an even grid, or try the sample walk cycle.

  2. 2

    Pick the frames

Click cells to choose frames in playing order, or pick a whole row or column. Fix the grid if a frame is cut off.

  3. 3

    Set the playback

Choose the frame rate, a 1× to 4× scale, looping, and a transparent or solid background.

  4. 4

    Make and download

Preview the animation, make the GIF, and save it.

Good to know about GIF output

  • Pixel art with 255 colors or fewer is kept exactly; sheets with more colors are reduced to one shared palette, so colors do not flicker between frames.
  • GIF transparency is on or off per pixel. For soft edges, pick a solid background color that matches where the GIF will be shown.
  • GIF timing works in 10 ms steps, so the delay per frame is rounded to the nearest step.
  • Empty cells are left out, and frames play in the order you selected them.
  • Sheets without a grid work too: each sprite is found on its own and aligned on one frame size.

Sprite sheet to GIF questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted by JavaScript in your browser tab, and the download is created on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account.

How does it find the frames?

When the sheet has a transparent background, it looks for the transparent lines between frames and picks the grid that fits them, including sheets that start a few pixels in. Otherwise it guesses from the image shape. You can always set columns, rows, offsets, and spacing yourself.

Can I make a GIF from just one animation on a sheet?

Yes. Character sheets often hold several animations, one per row. Use Only row to pick one, or click cells one by one; the GIF plays them in the order you chose, and Reverse flips the order.

What frame rate should I use?

Game sprites are often animated at 8 to 12 frames per second, and smoother motion at 15 to 24. Browsers play very short GIF delays slowly, so the converter keeps frame rates at 50 fps or lower.

Why do the edges look jagged?

GIFs cannot store partly transparent pixels, so soft edges become hard. Turn off the transparent background and choose a color that matches your page to blend the edges instead.

Does it work with sheets that have no grid?

Yes. Switch to Separate sprites, or let the tool pick it: every sprite is found on its own, a solid background colour is removed, and sprites of different sizes are aligned on one frame size, at the bottom centre by default.
