Convert a GIF to a sprite sheet in four steps
- 1
Drop your GIF
Choose an animated GIF, or try the sample walk cycle. The frames are decoded in your browser.
- 2
Choose the frames
Set the first and last frame, or keep every second or third frame to make the sheet smaller.
- 3
Set the layout
Choose how many columns, the spacing between frames, and a 1× to 4× scale with hard pixel edges.
- 4
Download
Save the sprite sheet PNG and its JSON, or a ZIP of numbered PNG frames.
What you download
- A PNG sprite sheet with the frames packed row by row; transparent pixels stay transparent.
- JSON in the Aseprite hash format, with each frame's rectangle and duration, the same layout AnimGen's own exports use.
- Frame timing taken from the GIF, so a frame the GIF holds longer keeps its longer duration.
- An optional ZIP of numbered PNG frames, every one the full canvas size.
GIF to sprite sheet questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted by JavaScript in your browser tab, and the download is created on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account.
Does the sprite sheet keep the GIF's transparency?
Yes. Pixels that are transparent in the GIF are transparent in the PNG. GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so there are no soft edges to carry over.
Which game engines can use the sprite sheet?
The PNG works in any engine. The JSON follows the Aseprite hash format that Phaser, PixiJS, and many engine importers read. Animations generated in AnimGen can also be exported as ready-made packs for Unity, Godot 4, Unreal Paper2D, Cocos Creator, and Construct 3.
Can I scale pixel art without blurring it?
Yes. The 2×, 3×, and 4× options copy each pixel into a square block, so pixel art stays sharp.
How large a GIF can it handle?
Up to 1,000 frames, limited by browser memory: the frame count times the frame area can be up to 64 million pixels, for example 250 frames at 512 × 512. The finished sheet must stay under 16,384 pixels on each side.
